Harrison Loses First Meet of Season to Fox Lane

HARRISON, N.Y. – “Rooster, rooster, cock-a-doodle-doo! We think Fox Lane’s a mighty fine crew!”

Those were the words chanted by the Harrison (3-1) boys’ swim team after their 55-39 defeat at the hands of Fox Lane (4-0) on Thursday at Louis M. Klein Middle School.

Harrison dropped its first meet of the year to a team with more than double its number of swimmers.

“We’re a team of 12 and they’re a team of 29,” Huskies coach Phill Dearstyne said. “We can’t really complain.”

Harrison lost crucial points in the 200 yard individual medley, in which Fox Lane finished first and second. Dearstyne said he maps out his desired results on a scoring chart prior to each meet, and he knew his team needed to finish at least in second and third in the relays.

In a four-lane race, first place earns four points, second place earns three and third place earns one. So a second and third place finish for one team cancels out the four points earned by the opponent.

Fox Lane coach Carolyn Johnson said she counted on star swimmer Will Rappaport, who finished third in the state at the 200 meter individual medley last year, to finish first in Thursday’s race. She did not, however, necessarily expect her team to claim the top two spots.

“That really surprised me because I thought (Coach Dearstyne) would put his better swimmers in there,” Johnson said.

Dearstyne said swim teams typically stop keeping score when they reach 48 points, at which point they have won the meet. The coach told his team after the meet that it should be proud that the competition came down to the last event.

“That was something to feel good about,” Dearstyne said. “This was a meet the whole time.”
