Harrison Moves Into District 20 Softball Final

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Once Harrison took the lead in the winners bracket final of the District 20 Little League Softball Minors Championship, Tamara Day made sure it was never relinquished.

Day tossed a two-hitter, struck out eight and received solid support from her defense Saturday in a 4-3 win over Eastchester at O’Rourke Field.

Harrison advances to the final at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sherman Park’s Volunteer Field. Eastchester goes to the losers bracket final and awaits the winner of Scarsdale-Ardsley, at 5:45 p.m. Monday at Brentwood Park in Harrison. Whichever team emerges from the losers bracket will have to beat Harrison twice to win the title.

“I was just focusing on throwing strikes, my catcher’s glove and throwing hard,” said the 11-year-old Day, a sixth-grader-to-be at Louis M. Klein Middle School.

After Eastchester scored in the first inning – the first run Day allowed in three games – Harrison answered with two runs. Connie Dragone plated Juliette Grasso with a fielder’s choice and Julie Ann D’Onofrio scampered home on an error.

Harrison increased its’ lead to 3-1 in the third inning when Lindsay McConway scored on a Day ground out.

“When we took the lead, that pumped us up and it made me feel better and more relaxed in the circle,” Day said.

Eastchester went hitless through three innings before Olivia Yorizzo doubled to lead off the fourth. She scored on an Angelina Porcello ground out, making it 3-2.

Harrison’s defense played a solid game, especially McConway, who scored two runs. The left-handed catcher threw out a runner attempting to steal third in the first inning. In the fourth, she chased down a wild pitch and threw to Day covering to get the Eastchester runner out.

Harrison ended the game when second baseman Lila Mogavero threw to first baseman D’Onofrio to get an Eastchester runner trying to stretch a single into a double.

Yorizzo pitched well in the loss, also allowing two hits and striking out nine. She scored Eastchester’s runs. Giulana Fogliano also had a run-scoring single.
