Harrison Opens 11-Year-Old Baseball With Win

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Jack Woolf and his teammates on the Harrison 11-year-old baseball all-star team sat and waited patiently for Sunday.

They watched many of their fellow Harrison Little League all-stars playing in their respective age divisions of the District 20 Little League Championships. The 11-year-old tournament finally opened Sunday with Harrison showing why it is a favorite to play for the title.

Harrison defeated Sherman Park, 14-1 in a first-round game of the District 20 Little League Baseball 11-year-old Championship at Volunteer Field. The game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Harrison will play White Plains in a winner’s bracket game Friday at 5:45 p.m. at Gedney Field. Sherman Park moves to the loser’s bracket and will play Friday at 5:45 p.m. at O’Rourke Field.

“We’ve been waiting for this,” said Woolf, 12, and a seventh-grader-to-be at Louis M. Klein Middle School. “It felt good to be playing. We feel we have a good team because a lot of the same guys are back from last year.”

Woolf and many of his teammates won the District 20 Minors’ title last year and played for the Section 4 championship.

Harrison led 4-1 through three before scoring 10 runs over the last two innings.

“We were making the plays in the field and that made us confident when we came to the plate,” Woolf said. “Our goals this year are to get back and win the district and also the section.”

Woolf drilled a three-run homer in the fifth inning to highlight a six-run inning. Peter Hoffman added a two-run single in the inning.

Joe DiDonato’s two-run double highlighted a four-run second inning. Noa Oki had a two-run single in the inning. Frankie Nannariello had a two-run single in the fourth.

Matt Panker scored Sherman Park’s run in the first inning. He singled and then Mike Matica singled.
