Harrison Pitcher Leads Holy Child to First Softball State Title

HARRISON, N.Y. – School of the Holy Child won the first New York State Association of Independent Schools softball championship in program history with a 5-3 win against Horace Mann on Tuesday.

The Gryphons finished a 15-5 season by claiming their ultimate prize. Coach Jen Cirillo and the team basked in the moment after the win.

“These girls truly worked together every game to get where they are today,” Cirillo said. “It is a huge accomplishment for our team and our coaching staff.”

Senior pitcher Kathleen Samuelson of Harrison finished her high school career on a high note by earning the win in the championship game. Samuelson is the student body president and will attend Brown University in the fall, where she intends to play softball.

The Gryphons defeated Poly Prep in Brooklyn in the May 23 semifinal game to make it to the finals. Cirillo expected 2012 to be a rebuilding year for the team, because the roster is 70 percent underclassmen.

Despite that expectation at the start of the season, School of the Holy Child now has the first state softball championship in the prep school’s 108-year history.

“We had an exceptional season,” Cirillo said. “Top to bottom we have some outstanding players. I’m very proud of our girls. I’m happy for them to be rewarded for their hard work by earning this accomplishment.”
