Harrison Volleyball Standout Segal Thrives At Bentley

SILVER LAKE, N.Y. – When Harrison volleyball standout Jessica Segal was being recruited, Bentley University coach Sandy Hoffman wanted her to make a position change.

Instead of setting, her slot during her four-year Harrison career, Segal was asked to become a defensive specialist at the Waltham, Mass., school. She embraced the move, focused on her new position during her club season and went on to have an outstanding freshman year.

Segal was one of three squad members to play all 110 games this season, finishing with 191 kills, third best on the team.

“I was pretty nervous when I first made the switch because I had never trained for it,” said Segal, a major factor in Harrison's winning consecutive Section 1 Class A titles in 2010 and 2011. “I worked hard during my senior year at the club level.”

Segal went into preseason confident that she had prepared herself. She made a smooth transition, immediately earning a starting spot.

“I felt that preseason I had acclimated myself to the new position as a result of a lot of repetitions,” Segal said. “That really helped me get better and earn the confidence of my teammates.”

Even though Segal was focusing on defense, she was also called on for her specialty – setting – at times, which put a smile on her face.

Bentley, which will have eight underclassmen returning for the 2013 season, recently completed its season in the difficult Northeast-10 Conference. Segal enjoyed her season and felt re-energized playing a new position.

“It was great to play as a freshman and I love the girls on the team,” Segal said. “After all these years of playing the game and loving it, it was like starting over again. I felt refreshed.”
