HARRISON, N.Y. -- Jenna Webb always knew she wanted to continue playing softball in college, but the recent Harrison graduate did not realize making her college decision would be so difficult.
Webb, a four-year varsity starter in center field for Harrison coach Dean Marino, narrowed her choices to Cortland, Roger Williams College and Springfield. Following her official visits, Webb was torn between Cortland and Springfield so she made one more trip to each college. After she concluded with both, Webb made Springfield her choice.
I felt at home at Springfield, said Webb, who will major in physical education. Walking around campus, I felt like I was already part of the Pride.
Springfields nickname is the Pride.
Webb, who hit .540 with 10 home runs and a program-record 56 RBI, will be reunited with former Harrison teammate Ashley Marino. Marino has been Springfields No. 1 pitcher her first two years. Yorktown graduate Christina Leader is a starting outfielder for Springfield, giving the Pride three Section 1 players.
On her initial visit to Springfield, Webb was paired with Leader, instead of Marino. Webb laughed when she explained why.
Coach would not allow me to be with Ashley because I knew her, said Webb of Springfield softball coach Julie Perrelli. Coach wanted me meet all of the girls and socialize more. But I did speak to Ashley.
Webb did speak to Marino following her second visit to Springfield concerning her decision and what to expect.
Ashley gave me good advice and told me that this was a decision I had to make for myself, Webb said. After I told my parents and the coach that I was going to Springfield, I told Ashley. She was happy I decided to go to Springfield.
Webb is excited about starting her college career, especially after speaking with Perrelli.
Coach wants to see the program succeed and she also wants us to have fun, Webb said. She is hoping for good things from me, but I know I will have to work hard this fall. I hope to succeed and start my freshman year at a high level.
