Manhattanville Administrator Kumar Drops Golf Post

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville golf coach Nikhil Kumar has stepped down from his position as head men’s golf coach to concentrate fully on his new position as acting Vice President of Undergraduate Enrollment Management at Manhattanville, it was announced on Friday by Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal.

"I've felt a wave of emotions over the last several days and this certainly hasn't been one of the easiest decisions,” Kumar said. “Having had the opportunity to build this team has truly been a rewarding experience for me, and I can't thank the administration, athletic department, alumni and players enough for their unwavering support and commitment to the program. It's truly been humbling to achieve what we have as a team this last decade."

Kumar, a 2005 Purchase graduate and former Valiants varsity golfer, has been playing or coaching the team through 11 of the last 13 years, and has helped to turn the program into one of the strongest in the Mid-Atlantic Region and Division III. As an undergraduate, Kumar was a four-time All-Skyline Conference first-team selection, the 2002 Skyline Conference Player of the Year, and led the squad to four straight Skyline Conference championships.

"I am very happy for Nikhil. This is an incredible opportunity that is very well deserved," Levinthal said. "We've all known for some time that he is a great golf coach, but he has quietly done an amazing job in graduate admissions as well. Replacing Nikhil will be difficult."

Kumar was named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year three times over seven seasons and produced six Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, three GCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honorees, three Freedom Conference Players of the Year and four Rookies of the Year, and 23 combined All-Conference performers. The Valiants won three straight Freedom Conference championships and a NCAA Div. III Championship appearance this spring.

A national search is already underway for Kumar’s replacement as coach.
