Manhattanville Falls in NCAA Postseason Play

HOBOKEN N.J. – The Manhattanville Valiants men's soccer team was knocked out of the 2011 NCAA Tournament Saturday, losing a tight match to SUNY Brockport by the score of 1-0 by at the De Baun Athletic Field.

Manhattanville and Brockport each received Pool C at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament and faced off with the Valiants as the higher seed. Through the first 45 minutes of play each side tried to penetrate one another's defense with no success.

Brockport’s Brian Duffy scored the game’s lone goal late in the second half when he found a hole in the Valiants’ defensive wall on a penalty kick and got it past goalie Jason Torres (Harrison High). The ball spun towards the right post away from Torres and into the back of the goal. Torres made five saves in the losing effort and finished the season with a 13-4-1 record in goal.

Manhattanville’s best early chance for a goal came in the 39th minute of the first period when junior forward Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario) spun around and took a hard shot that rang off the crossbar. After the halftime break the Valiants had more control of the offensive possessions as both Olazabal and senior Keston George took several chances that were stopped by Brockport goalkeeper Kyle Sauln.

The Valiants, who outshot Brockport 17-12, ended their season with a record of 15-4-1.
