PURCHASE, N.Y. Taylor Wilson scored a game-high 21 points and freshman Sarah Vann made three critical plays in the final moments to lift the Manhattanville women's basketball team to a 71-64 victory over Eastern Connecticut State in the teams home opener Monday at Kennedy Gym.
It was a heck of a win, head coach Lauren Thomer said. To have a freshman like Vann come up huge for us late in the game was big and really exciting for the future of this program. Before this season a lot of people counted us out and we need to earn that respect after being picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll.
Wilson led the way with great outside shooting, making four three-pointers, and teammate Kelli Hyjek added 13 points, with five coming from the charity stripe. Courtney Turner added 12 points, all coming from the field, while Vann added 11 points from the bench.
Up 62-60 with just over two minutes remaining, Vann collected a rebound and hit a layup and the ensuing free-throw after being fouled. After a missed layup by Eastern Connecticut, Vann hit a jumper with 65 seconds to give the Valiants a seven-point lead at 67-60.
Manhattanville (2-2) will have a quick turn round and be back at Kennedy Gym Wednesday for open conference play against the Eastern Eagles 6 p.m. Game coverage is available 10 minutes prior to the contest on GoValiants.TV.
