HARRISON, N.Y. -- Kevin Nathanson made the decision just before the high school preseason began to return to Harrison for his senior year and play football.
Nathanson, who attended Harrison schools through eighth grade before going to Brunswick for three years, has been a added bonus for the Harrison varsity football team.
The senior starts at fullback and Friday continued with his fine season, scoring three touchdowns in Harrison’s 35-6 win against Horace Greeley in a Section 1 Class A football game.
Harrison improved to 6-0 and has earned a top-two seed for the Section 1 Class A Football Championships. The Huskies close out the regular season with arch rival Rye.
Nathanson had scoring runs of 13 and 2 yards and also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Vinnie Nicita.
“I had always been watching them and rooting for them,” Nathanson said. “I talked to my family about wanting to come back and they felt it was a good decision.”
Nicita and the team welcomed back Nathanson, who played for two years on the modified football team with many of his current teammates.
“Even though everyone knew that Kevin would be competing for someone’s job, we were all excited about him coming back,” said Nicita, who threw two touchdown passes on the night. “And everyone just wanted to win.”
Nathanson plowed in from the 2-yard line for Harrison’s first touchdown, then doubled the lead by catching a Nicita swing pass and going 15 yards untouched for a score. Nathanson closed out his night with a 13-yard burst in the second quarter.
“I knew Kevin was good in middle school but I had not seen him play in a few years,” Nicita said. “Kevin has exceeded every expectation and has made our offense that much better.”
Earlier this season, in Harrison’s dramatic rally versus John Jay-Cross River, Nathanson ran for more than 100 yards in the second half and scored the decisive touchdown.
“It has been an amazing experience playing with all of the guys here,” Nathanson said. “Tonight was a fun night.”
