Polakoff, a four-year varsity starter, is currently 16-1 and has won the John Jay-East Fishkill Patriot Tournament. Polakoff’s excellent start has earned him the honors of being names The Harrison Daily Voice Athlete of the Month for December.

A captain, along with classmates Joe Maida and Gavin Menchel, Polakoff has helped lead the young Huskies to a 9-3 start. It has been an outstanding first month for Polakoff, but it does not surprise Harrison coach Vinny Nicita.

“David, along with Joe and Gavin, did what he needed to do in the off-season,” Nicita said. “David went to the Max Askren wrestling club and was wrestling with some of the best guys in the section. By doing that, he increased his work ethic, showed him that he can wrestle with these guys and gave him a confidence boost.”

Nicita said Polakoff returned a stronger wrestler, also, through working with the top guys.

“David felt he needed work from the bottom,” Nicita said. “He has continued to work on it and you can see a big improvement. He is tough to hold down. He is also finishing his shots. Last year he would get in a shot and sometimes didn’t finish.”

Polakoff also helps the team with his leadership.

“David is emerging as the leader of this team,” Nicita said. “He sets the example for the younger guys, makes sure everybody is doing what they are supposed to be doing. David is like having another coach in the room.”
