Power, Pitching Lift Harrison Over Ardsley

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Harrison rebounded from an early deficit, blasting three home runs en route to an easy 12-2 victory Wednesday in the District 20 double-elimination playoff tournament at McDowell Field.

Henry Witte’s two-run home run to centerfield in the fourth inning clanked off the scoreboard, breaking a 2-2 tie and capping a three-run inning that gave Harrison a 4-2 lead it would pad later.

“I hit an inside pitch,” Witte said. “I didn’t many to center, but we have home run hitters.”

Harrison, which had one loss in the 11-12-year-old tournament, advanced to Friday’s semifinal round game at Pat Henry Field in Valhalla. Ardsley lost its second game of the tournament and was eliminated.

Ardsley opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Brent Ito and Ricky Chenard scored to give the hosts a 2-0 lead, but Harrison pitching would not allow another run. Harrison broke the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs, highlighted by a towering grand slam home run of the bat of Daniel Klein. James Hulbert added a home run in the top of the sixth. Harrison starter Andrew Gurgitano was the winner and Hulbert got the save.

“It’s easy to pitch when you have good fielding behind you,” Gurgitano said.
