The Purchase College golf team hosted its third annual golf tournament Monday, edging Westfield State 331-332 at the Fairview Country Club.
Port Chesters Esteban Cervantes played the role of hero, lifting the Panthers to the match victory on the final green when he sank a 50-foot birdie putt for the win. Cervantes shot an 83 for the round as the Panthers topped the Massachusetts squad and also bested and local Division II power Nyack College, which placed third.
What an incredible day for golf and what an incredible performance by our team, said Purchase Head Coach Jim Alfredo. It's not an easy course, but they went to work and found a way to pull it out. I was very impressed with the collective effort and I think this is a great jumping point for more to come.
The top performer from each of the first three teams received medalist plaques with Purchase's sophomore Ian Cumming leading the way for his team.
The consummate professional posted an 82 to lead the Panthers, shooting a 39 on the front end of the par 72 course. Freshmen Zach Hummel from Brookhaven, N.Y. also shot an 82, posting a 42 and 40 for his final.
Cervantes and captain senior Jonas Borr, from New York, N.Y., followed with an 83 and 84, respectively. Senior Mike Zeffiro from Brant, N.Y., rounded out the scoring for Purchase with an 87.
