Purchase College Names New Head Athletic Trainer

PURCHASE, N.Y. – John Cortes, a former minor league baseball Athletic Trainer of the Year, has been named the new head athletic trainer at Purchase College, SUNY, Athletic Director Chris Bisignano announced Wednesday.

Cortes, who replaces longtime Purchase trainer Tim Lampron, earned a bachelor's degree in health sciences from the University of Central Florida in 2007. Following his graduation, the Florida native served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Syracuse University and completed a master's degree in exercise science in 2009.

“I am very excited to be at Purchase College,” Cortes said. “This program continues to build, and I am looking forward to helping the process along.”

After graduating from Syracuse, Cortes worked with the Houston Astros organization from 2009 through 2011, serving as a minor league athletic trainer. He earned the Gulf Coast League Athletic Trainer of the Year award in 2011.

“We are extremely excited to have John on board,” Bisignano said. “He comes to Purchase with an outstanding background. He is a welcomed addition to our program.”

The athletic department at Purchase has seen its share of change since spring. With the promotion of former Athletic Director Ernie Palmieri to vice president of student affairs, Bisignano moved from his assistant job to the athletic director's post. Cortes joined the department last week in preparation for the upcoming fall campaign.

Prior to coming to Purchase, Cortes was an athletic trainer at Professional Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy in Mamaroneck.
