PURCHASE, N.Y. The Purchase mens basketball team overcame a slow start Monday and went on to defeat Maritime 72-63.
The Panthers (7-5, 5-0 in Skyline Conference) trailed 33-29 at halftime after falling behind 12-5 in the first five minutes of the game, but recovered with the strong offensive play of John Pressley leading the way in the second half. Pressley led all Panthers scorers with 21 points.
Swingman D.J. Smith added 17 off the bench, including a 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Antonio Johnson delivered a big three-pointer inside the final minutes to help preserve the victory.
Greenburgh resident Justin Person totaled nine points and nine rebounds, Brandon Serrano added nine points and six rebounds, and captain B.J Warrington contributed eight points and five rebounds, including four key free throws late in the gameMaritime was led by reserve T-Vaughn Gibson, who scored 25, and co-captain Mike McSloy, who scored 20 in defeat.The Panthers, who remain undefeated in conference play, host Old Westbury Thursday night.
