HARRISON, N.Y. For the third consecutive year, the Purchase College mens and womens swim teams will spend part of their winter breaks training in Puerto Rico.
The two teams will leave next week and will spend one week training under, hopefully, sunny skies. Head coach Peter Nestel said the teams will train four to five hours each day and that the annual change of scenery has been a key component of the success of the program in recent years.
While they are tired, we still have time to explore the island and the culture, Nestel said.
Part of that exploration will occur when the swimmers travel on kayaks at night and visit a bioluminescent bay.
The swimmers raised the funds for the trip themselves by selling cookie dough and raffling off swim lessons. They also worked at a triathlon and made use of donation letters and proceeds from the Sneaker Ball.
The team said the special training pays off toward the end of the schedule, particularly in the Skyline Conference Championships in early February.
Purchases next meet is against Brooklyn College on Jan. 21.
