RYE, N.Y. -- Alex Corda made an impact in his first Westchester County Swimming Championships. The 12-year-old Purchase resident won the 50-yard freestyle and was the high-point titlist Thursday as the 86th annual meet at Playland Pool concluded.
Corda, an eighth-grader-to-be at Louis M. Klein Middle School in Harrison, covered the 50 yards in 25.29 seconds, giving him his first county title. His total of 23 points also gave him the 12-and-under high-point trophy.
I was looking to take it out strong because I knew the other guys would do just as well so I had to do better, Corda said.
Corda seized the lead at the 25-yard mark and drove hard for the wall. When I took a breath, I looked to my right and left and noticed that those guys were with me the whole time, Corda said. When I noticed that, I just put my head down, started sprinting and hoped for the best.
Once he touched the wall, Corda felt positive. I just had a good feeling that I won, Corda said. The feeling of winning for the first time here is awesome!
