Quinteros Goal Propels Manhattanville Over Vassar

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Freshman Yani Quinteros’ first career goal came at just the right time Friday when he legged an overtime goal to give the undefeated Valiant a 2-1 victory over Vassar in the second game of the 2011 Valiant Classic at GoValiants.com Field.

With the scored tied 1-1 in the first overtime, Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario) dribbled the ball down the sideline and sent a cross towards the Vassar goal.

After initially being stopped by the Vassar keeper, the rebound bounced in front of the net where Quinteros (Shirley, N.Y.) saw an opening and rattled the back of the net for his first career goal and the overtime winner. The Valiants dominated the first half with a number of chances, including hitting the crossbar twice, until Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) notched his third goal of the season for a 1-0 lead just before halftime.

Vassar outshot the Valiants 6-3 in the second half and outnumbered the Valiants in corner kicks 6-3, tying the score at 1-1 on header by Juliano Pereira at the 81:08 to send the game into overtime. Vassar got the first opportunity in the overtime period on a corner kick by Macklin that was handled nicely by Valiant's goalkeeper Jason Torres, a Harrison High School graduate. Torres picked up his first win of the season, seeing action for the first time in 2011. Manhattanville (3-0-0) will be back in action tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. against Berkeley (N.Y.), which fell in the opening game of the Valiant Classic to Baruch 4-2 earlier in the day. Vassar (2-1-1) returns to the pitch against Baruch at 5 p.m. Have you been out to atch the Valiants soccer teams play? Tell us on Facebook at The Daily Harrison
