RYE, N.Y. -- Rye Country Day School running back Andrew Miller of Harrison has been selected as a Golden Dozen scholar/athlete for the 2011 fall season, along with teammates Chibueze Nwakeze and Golden Dozen Honorable Mention Sam Stern, who were members of the Wildcats Fairchester and bowl championship teams.
“It's an honor to win an award that recognizes both athletics and academics,” Miller said. “In high school, it's important to find a healthy balance between school and sports, and it's humbling to win an award that defines that idea. I think it's great that the Golden Dozen committee values the idea of the student-athlete.”
Miller rushed for 1,223 yards and 17 touchdowns on 122 carries for an average of 10.2 yards per run. He helped lead the Wildcats to a perfect 10-0 record, the first in school history, and the Fairchester Athletic Association championship with a 7-0 league record. The ‘Cats then advanced to a NEPSAC Bowl for the second straight year and defeated Pingree (Mass.) 27-26 in the Dan Rorke Bowl for the school’s first bowl victory.
The “Golden Dozen” are selected by the Westchester Chapter of the National Football Foundation every year and include the top scholar-athletes on the football field from the recently completed fall season. The players will be honored at the National Football Foundation Awards Banquet at Westchester Country Club in Harrison on Jan. 26.
