Somers Has Its Way With Yorktown, Wins Sectional Football Title

MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The No. 3-seed Somers High football team opened Saturday night's Class A championship game against Yorktown by making a statement - scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter.

The Somers football team gave fans lots to cheer about Saturday night, beating Yorktown handily in the Class A championship game.

And Somers (9-1) never looked back, sprinting to a 42-6 victory over the top-seeded Huskers - the team that had topped Somers 34-13 early this season.

Somers, which won its third title in the last five years, was set to move on to the state quarterfinals Saturday, Nov. 12 at Mahopac High, facing Section 9's Cornwall at 12:30 p.m.

Matt Pires (named the game's offensive MVP) and Messiah Horne both came up huge for Somers, with Pires rushing for both of the team's early scores and finishing with three touchdowns, and Horne adding 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Yorktown, which was hurt by four turnovers, closed at 9-1. Brett Makar had a TD reception, and had 77 yards on the ground for the Cornhuskers.
