Swimming Championships Begin Monday at Playland

RYE, N.Y. -- The 86th annual Westchester County Swimming Association Championships will commence Monday and run through Thursday at Playland pool. Swimming will begin 4:30 p.m. each day.

The championships have been held at Playland since the pool opened in 1928, according to Officials’ Representative Paul McClintock. Lake Isle Country Club of Eastchester is the six-time defending champion. The championships bring together the swimming and diving teams from the two conferences -- Westchester County Swim Conference and Northern Westchester Swim Conference. McClintock pointed out that this will be the final year that Playland will be the host of the championships because the pool is scheduled to be closed at summer’s conclusion.

“County budget cutbacks had slated the Playland and Sprain Ridge pools for closing this year, or I should say for not opening,” McClintock said. “Local politicians were able to get Playland opened for 2011 but we have been advised by the county that we should seek an alternative site for next year.”

As a result of this, McClintock said the swimmers will be treated to a something special. “We are including old photos, etc., in our annual program and have given all athletes entering the meet (over 1000) a commemorative photo luggage tag,” McClintock said. “T-shirts will be available with the same picture with "the end of an era" on them.”
