Tischler Named Golf Coach At Manhattanville College

PURCHASE, N.Y. — George Tischler was looking forward to continuing his golf career on the amateur level when he was presented with an offer he couldn't refuse from his old coach at Manhattanville College.

Nikhil Kumar asked Tischler, a graduate of Greenwich High School, whether he would be interested in becoming the college's new coach. Tischler took the job.

“When he approached me asking if I would take over I was so humbled and honored that he would even consider nominating me to take over,” said Tischler, who is studying for his master’s degree in sports business management. “I never foresaw myself as a coach or, for that matter, doing anything in golf other than being a successful amateur player.”

The 2011 Manhattanville College graduate is coming off an outstanding fall season and one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. Tischler posted three of the four lowest scores in program history, including a two-under par 69 at the Hamilton Invitational.

After the season concluded, Tischler stayed in touch with Kumar, who stepped down as coach. “Nikhil took on another role at the school that was much higher up and, therefore, was unable to commit to the program like he did so selflessly in the past,” Tischler said.

Tischler understands the adjustment he will have to make as goes from player and teammate to coach.

“How I communicate to my players will be the biggest adjustment, some of whom were teammates of mine last season,” he said. “However, this team has so much potential and youth that I look forward to this year and years to come."
