PURCHASE, N.Y. Seniors Jeff Ventura and Trevoy Pointer each scored a team-high 18 points and tied for and classmate Armani Blackmon added his first career double-double as the Manhattanville men's basketball team held off Saint John Fisher 73-66 Friday in the opener of the 2011 Castle Classic at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Venturas performance was a career best as he hit on 6-of-8 shooting and a 3-of-4 mark from beyond 3-point arc. Pointer shot just 5-of-11 from the field, but was 8-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line, while Blackmon also drained eight free throws to finish with 12 points and 12 boards.
Senior Ivan Jovicic had a perfect night from the field, as he nailed all four of his three-point attempts to also finish with 12 points.
The Valiant defense showed its strength down the stretch, holding the Cardinals without a field goal from the 6:19 mark until a meaningless layup with just seven seconds remaining. During the stretch, Saint John Fisher missed 13 straight shots from the field and made just one free throw, turning a four-point SJF lead into a nine-point Valiant edge.
In the first game of the day, Hartwick held off Brooklyn College to pull out a 60-54 victory
All four teams will be back in action Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gym with Brooklyn (1-1) and Saint John Fisher (1-1) battling at 3 p.m. before Manhattanville (1-1) and Hartwick (2-0) follow with the tournament championship game beginning at approximately 5 p.m.
