Versatile Offense Powers Harrison Football

HARRISON, N.Y. ? Harrison's varsity football team feels it's finally firing on all cylinders following a crushing 49-14 route of Tappan Zee last Friday.

Previously, even though it had opened the 2012 season with three consecutive wins, scoring 30 or more points per game, the offense thought it was not playing a complete game.

“We wanted to put it all together and play a full game,” quarterback Vinnie Nicita said. “The first two games against White Plains and John Jay, we didn’t play full games.

“We felt we really put it together against Tappan Zee and we were clicking really well.”

Harrison entered the season as a ground-oriented team with Nicita expertly running the triple option. However, since a second-half rally in its 35-34 win over John Jay-Cross River, the strong-armed Nicita has been going to the air with more regularity thanks to the play-calling of assistant coach Harry Peterson.

“It helps to be a much more versatile offense,” Nicita said. “We want to control the line of scrimmage and run the ball, but now it stops teams from bringing eight to nine guys up in the box. Even when I throw an interception, which I did against Tappan Zee, the coaches have confidence in me to come right back and throw the ball.”

Harrison has a stable of running backs in Kevin Nathanson, Jake Marino and Robert Waldman to power the rushing game. The Huskies also have three sure-handed receivers in Cory Calcagni, Nick Pipitone and Michael Rossi.
