HARRISON, N.Y. -- The Harrison varsity girls volleyball team accomplished something last year that no other female team had done in school history. The Huskies won the Section 1 Class A volleyball championship, in an epic five-set match against Walter Panas.
They didnt tell us until after we won, senior four-year varsity player Jessica Segal said. It was an experience I will never forget and after they told us, it made the experience a lot better.
Now that Harrison owns the title, the Huskies are hoping to make it two in-a-row as they prepare for the 2011 season. Segal and her teammates closed out a three-hour practice Friday and were relaxing in the gymnasium as Harrison coach Candy Light and her assistants were making final decisions. Winning the title last year means that Harrison will no longer go unnoticed.
Last year, we were the underdogs and we were under the radar, Segal said. We didnt lose any seniors so everyone will be expecting a lot more from us and there will be a lot more pressure on us.
Before her junior year concluded, Segal, Jenna Webb and their classmates called a team meeting to discuss what needed to be done during the summer.
We spoke right before summer league about the importance of staying in shape, Segal said. We knew it was going to be a tough preseason so we would have to work hard and give it 100 percent in preseason.
Harrison always had a collective confidence in itself, but last year, it came to fruition. We always knew we had a good team, and now this year we all feel we want to win even more, Segal said. Now, more than ever, we are aware of how hard it is to win the section. We went five games with Panas and the three games we won were each by two points. We know that Panas will want it even more this year.
Segal said it has been an excellent week of practice as the girls have come together as a team, quickly. We want to get even better this year and finish off on another good note, Segal said.
