Thank you for the opportunity to talk about the MLK Day projects! As always, volunteer registration is available online or by phone; online url is www.volunteer-center.org/mlk2014 and by phone at (914) 948-4452. If you want to do a food drive for HOPE Community Services and/or Mt. Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry, I have a poster you can easily print out/distribute to co-workers, neighbors, friends, etc. Also, we have a project on Monday, Jan. 20th with United Way of Westchester and Putnam's 2-1-1 Helpline. For those new to 2-1-1, you can dial 2-1-1 from your phone and get assistance with those questions like, "Which organizations will drive my elderly parent to a doctor's appointment?" or "How can I get assistance with my heating bill?" During times of emergencies, like during and after Sandy, 2-1-1 is a vital resource for non-life-threatening situations such as "Where is there a source of dry ice?" or "What organization is helping fill out FEMA forms?" Volunteers for 2-1-1 need to be trained and when there is no emergency going on (keep your fingers crossed!) is the best time for training. It only takes 2 hours and takes place at United Way of Westchester and Putnam's offices on Central Avenue in White Plains. View Comment
