Education is the key to growth, upward mobility and continued participation in the American society. As a Non Profit organization, Latino U seeks to provide resources to first-generation Latino students who seek to go to college to improve their lives and make a better life for themselves, their families and their children. This is something immigrants have aspired to since the founding of America. The need for a college degree is an economic imperative for employment in this generation, yet the complexity of the college application and financial aid process is more challenging than ever! I am truly appreciative of this wonderful article highlighting the need for college access and resources for first-generation Latino students. Please let me clarify one point on the article.... it was while assisting my daughter with her college process that I recognized the inequity in resources that currently exists overall. My daughters were fortunate to have parents who had both attended college, had resources and could assist them. What I could not imagine was how did the children who did not have this good fortune, maneuver through entirely on their own? This issue is what has compelled me and Latino U College Access to be a resource and support for the community. We will screen the documentary "First Generation" at our event tomorrow. This documentary explores the problem of college access faced by first generation and low-income students and how their success has major implications for the future of our nation.
