Problem not knowing who my representatives will be in future because this is not the first time I find myself in another district living in the same place. Voting signs still up in parts of White Plains while on election day there was no sign at Eastview. Very sad that people do not vote and government will probably not change till more do vote. Redistricting is all political and often dividing up communities by streets.
Just listened to the first round of people who spoke Mon since there was no live broadcast. Nothing different was said from previous hearings but again no one understands where the city gets its operating money and that is from sales tax, not business tax but sales tax revenues spent by many who do not live in the city. Schools buy from local businesses and so will FASNY. Doubtful if they buy pizzas that it will come from outside the city. I love the bringing back the natural look of the land and no more herbicides to keep the lawns green. Many comments were from others and hearsay is not proof of anything. Clapping and heckling by those in crowd prove why hearings should never be at outside places and people who spoke before tried to speak again. No one from this group can speak for the other neighborhoods in White Plains and especially from where most of the city lives. Not much diversity in the Gedney Farms neighborhood. Every major change in White Plains has drawn opposition but here no one is being forced out. I hate the signs and I would bit want to live with this in my area. I hate all signage and avoid this area because of it. I can see why the school bought this property cause there is no other like it in lower Westchester. There are things the city can do to improve the area if the school comes in for traffic but parents leaving off students by public bus stop for high school is horrible. Making North street one way is just not going to happen as one woman suggested. Sidewalks can go in but they will be on private property and have to be maintained (clear of snow, grass). Multiple houses will be a loss of open space and a construction disaster. Adding more city roads will be worse for everyone. View Comment
Districts have changed so not sure who will be my representatives in Jan. not sure even what people are running cause I got no mail. If Teachout doesn't win or Credico, I will vote for Astornio and against every incumbent cause Congress and our state needs drastic changes. I hope people vote but there are only now ads for primary on TV.
Complaints about poorly maintained construction sites often go no where when you contact White Plains government. Construction on Main St for Cambria Hotel Suites continues to create a hazardous situation even after the sidewalk went in. Often left on sidewalk is construction supplies/ debris. Cone by bus stop over something like wires sticks up in middle of sidewalk. Garbage for stores opened sometimes are near curb but others by store and this becomes an obstacle course. Dog feces left between containers. Construction began in 2011 and no store or hotel room is open yet in 2014. Construction site on Maple Ave/ Waller is horrible. Garbage remains with now piles of dirt next to the narrow uneven sidewalk. Wood fence on Maple is open with dirt leaning on poles over sidewalk. Sewer top left open. Gate is not secure and can easily be knocked over on Maple. I even spoke to Mayor on phone about these sites as well as enforcement but the problems continued. The city only acts with complaints so the dangerous sites continue unless numerous people complain. Curb cuts or sidewalk areas not put in when there is construction on sidewalk. Pees have to walk into on coming traffic. Police if at sites talk to construction workers, use their phones and ignore pedestrians/traffic. They let bikers on sidewalk and in crosswalks. View Comment
I stopped getting the Journal when they were going to charge me double and they kept demonizing teachers reporting how teachers and unions was the cause of the economic downfall caused by businesses giving bonuses when they were suffering loses and banks giving mortgages to credit risky people. NY ended up with Tier 6 for teachers but they didn't go after overtime for police and/or firemen, facing disabilities and mayors and/or other politicians who got pensions after serving less than what other public employees have to. And, then they gave themselves brand new digs! Posting salaries and then who had registered guns was over the top. I loved reading the paper and used to bring it to school to share with students. I have been buying the NY Times. Why not outsource like many businesses to get out of paying taxes.
Very nice. Makes more sense for the students/adults who go to this building. I just hope they can keep the basket as it is now. This might also be a good idea for the high school and even some of the city parks. Not everyone plays tennis. View Comment
For freebies check out the TILI Shed in White Plains. Leave things and take things for free. Businesses throwing out usable garbage should contribute to eliminate garbage left on sidewalks. I got so many great items and had a great place to leave them. There is the Westchester Treasure Hunt also to give away and find things. They are on hold but offer other sites. FB has a tag sale online. Why pay for something you can get for free? View Comment
Nice reporting but how can you say the use of e-texts has resulted in the reduction in academic failures? This can be tested but something else could be at play. A novelty can be great at the on set and then become less if a factor as each year goes. Anything that helps teens stay focused is a good thing but plagiarism can also be easier with computers that copy, cut and paste. Note taking from a tablet can be a plus. Other schools are already wired so the cost to White Plains schools can be a plus. A phone could be used as well and the library is also a source of e-books.
Stores closing don't seem to affect nail salons in WP. There are a number of them. Mamaroneck Ave in Mamaroneck has few of these shops but when I walked there today, I only noted a few closed stores along the road where in WP many have closed in the last 6 months. They had no homeless sitting with stolen shopping carts along the street. Maybe the benches need to go and recycle bins that lock. There were few planter areas and there were sidewalk restaurant areas. Parking along road needs to be like in Mamaroneck to slow the roll of cars and allow people to park in front of stores. Get rid of wide side walks and put in side by side parking in WP. See if that keeps stores in business. Garbage needs to be picked up multiple times and pot holes filled in along roads especially ones near crossing areas and where cars park. There were some recent changes from my complaints but WP could learn something from other places near by. People don't like walking even a block to eat out. View Comment
Verizon user but commercials on every show are driving me to switch channels. Like new Fios 1 for local news. Costs go up all the time. We pay for shareholder profits. Gas was $3.59 on Hamilton Ave yesterday in White Plains. Go figure?. View Comment
Retired teacher as I am will vote for anyone other than Cuomo. He went after teachers with new Tiers and the pensions are next. How about accountability to other state, county and city workers who milk their pensions with overtime deals that cost tax payers big time. This is what happens with police, firemen and even workers getting schools ready for next week. Paying triple time for Labor Day. No accountability that all workers are doing their jobs and not doing other things like shopping, texting and talking.
This has been one of the quickest construction structures to go up in WP and it looks so good. I hope they fix Waller as they did Lyon cause the street is horrible. The area is depressed with lots of stores on Post Rd closed. Area needs more work. I am cleaning the area at Post Rd & S Broadway cause BID and or city has not. Store at corner is boarded up and barriers in street creating weeds to grow on St with garbage. Sidewalk on S Broadway for 170 Medical Building needs to be redone. All patches are gone with bug gaps. Garbage is across where people walk. Glad overgrowth by this lot on Lyon was cleaned up at S Broadway. I couldn't even see crosswalk sign. Nice someone put plantings in empty planters but garbage needs to picked up more than once a day. Cars throw stuff from cars. City needs to fix Waller lot along Hamilton and garbage stays cause public worker told me he just does the parking lot. Sidewalks along lots need repaving at Waller lot across from new lot.
