The light mixture of snow and sleet began around sunrise in Orange and Rockland counties before moving east to northern Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess.
Drivers on the road in those areas Thursday morning are urged to exercise caution.
Rain, snow, and sleet is likely before 11 a.m. then a mix of rain and snow between 11a.m. and noon, then rain after noon as the high temperature will reach between 46 and 48 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
There could be heavy downpours in the late afternoon and early evening as up to 1 inch of rain is possible.
Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch is possible in those points north.
Rain will continue throughout the region until around midnight, followed by overnight showers.
It will clear up Friday with partly cloudy skies and a high of around 50.
