HARRISON, N.Y. - As the new year approaches, The Daily Harrison has compiled a list of the top 10 stories to come out of the town this past year. With some help from local residents, we're hoping we can take readers back through the year and remember, reflect and discuss the biggest stories.
Stories are not ranked in any particular order.
Heat Wave Hits Harrison, Causes Power Concerns - Original story ran on 7/21/11
Weather had its moments in 2011 and Harrison was no exception. The town survived a brutal heat wave last July that eventually raised concerns over the area's power grid.
With temperatures going into the upper '90s, the town opened up local cooling stations at the local libraries, fire departments and senior centers to keep its vulnerable residents safe from the heat.
Luckily, the town made it through without any major outages.
Snow Arrives in Harrison - Original story ran on 10/29/11
On the other side of the spectrum, Harrison saw some of the white stuff when they didn't necessarily expect it. Days before Halloween, a significant amount of snow fell in and around Harrison, knocking over loose trees and branches and cutting power for several residents.
Worse than the snow was the intense wind that accompanied it and Harrison's streets were littered with trees and debris after the storm made its way through. Consolidated Edison was on the case for the days following the storm, luckily restoring power to most of the town within days.
Harrison was luckier than bordering towns in the sense that others had many more power outages and residents without power for longer. There hasn't been a significant snowfall since, but the heart of winter is still to come.
Stay tuned throughout the week for follow-ups and expanded reflections on more stories.
