HARRISON, N.Y. While fireworks, a concert and a festival are part of the weekend entertainment for the 35th annual Its Great to Live in Harrison Celebration/Columbus Day Observance, the parade remains the highlight.
The Monday parade, which starts at 10 a.m., begins on Thatcher Avenue and goes down Halstead Avenue, ending in front of Town Hall.
Harrison Recreation Department Supervisor Gerry Salvo, who helped put the festive weekend together, is most excited for the parade because the police and fire departments and the Ambulance Corps all get involved.
He also is grateful for the charitable efforts of local organizations.
"After the parade, local community organizations, the school, they sell items and food and most of the stuff goes to charity," he said. "It gives them an opportunity to raise some money also for their organizations and for other charities that they give to."
Following the parade, lifelong Harrison resident Nick Galasso will be honored with a plaque for being named the 29th annual Harrison Citizen of the Year.
The Oct. 6-8 celebration has been advertised online, on the local cable channel, in banners around town, and through fliers at the schools, said Salvo, who added that he and his department started working on the event in February. He said thousands of people attend the last day.
Its a great weekend, he said. Its all about bringing the community together and having all these events its fun.
This years event will have more of a focus on activities for teenagers, which means there will be carnival games and rides at the festival.
Were bringing in some new stuff this year in a sense of more for young teens inflatable rides for little kids even up 'til teenagers, he said before adding that the event will also feature the popular photo booth.
