The idea came at an Ossining Documentary and Discussion Series program, when “it occurred to Mayor Victoria Gearity that the Village may have a role to play in improving the lives of transgender and gender neutral people," the village said.
The policy for single-person bathrooms was proposed last month, and unanimously approved by the Village Board on July 18.
According to officials, “The Village of Ossining has long considered itself a model of diversity encouraging people of different races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation and economic status to live and work here.
"The Village’s diversity includes members of the LGTBQ community who are transgender or gender neutral. This policy is designed as a clear statement to the greater Ossining community, and to those who visit our municipal properties, that Ossining is welcoming to all.”
Gender neutral signage is expected to apply to the Municipal Building lobby, Nelson Park, Birdsall Fagan Police–Court Facility lobby and Henry Gourdine Park kiosk, and to single-use restrooms in new or upgraded municipal facilities.
Gearity said that “this is a simple policy that sends a strong message to the LGBTQ community - all are welcome in Ossining.”
