David Grill received two nominations in the category "Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special" for his work on the Superbowl Halftime Show featuring Beyonce and on the PBS special "Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portofino." Grill is a resident of Mahwah, NJ and is the co-coordinator of the Theatre Design/Technology program as well as a part-time faculty member at Purchase College.

This is the first time that Grill has received two nominations in the same year. He was previously nominated in 2008 and 2012, and won an Emmy for "Outstanding Lighting Direction" in 2002 for his work on the XIX Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Whether he is lighting a tenor in an Italian fishing village or a pop singer in front of millions of viewers, Grill is always striving for excellence in his projects.

"No matter what you do, you are constantly asking yourself what can be done better, more interestingly, and all within a finite amount of time," he said.

"Dave's continuing accomplishments as a top-flight lighting designer make us all incredibly proud and validate what we already know - that he's a consummate professional and a leader in his field," said Greg Taylor, director of the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Purchase. "Purchase College students are so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from him."

Grill earned his BFA in theatre design from Purchase College in 1986 and has taught at the school since 1998. He is not the only Purchase alum to receive a nomination this year. Edie Falco of the Class of 1986 received a nomination in the "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy" category for her work on "Nurse Jackie" and former Purchase student Melissa Leo received a nomination for "Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series" for her work on "Louie."

The 65th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sunday, Sept. 22.
