MAMARONECK, N.Y. The restaurant known for having the countys best pizza was even more popular than usual Monday night.
Families from around Westchester lined up at Frankie and Fanucci's, which was named by Westchester Magazine "Best Pizza" and Best New Restaurant for its Mamaroneck location, which opened in December 2010.
The eatery celebrated its recent accolades by offering margarita pies for just $1.00 Monday. The pizzas usually sell for $9.95.
"We were shocked," said Susan Sheerin, who was seated with three 11-inch-pies on the table for herself and two kids just a few minutes after 5 p.m., when the $1.00 pizza pie promotion began.
"We thought we were going to get a small little pizza."
Emma Sheerin, 13, said the pizza was tasty.
"It was delicious, she said.
While the Rye resident, her daughter and son Danny, 12, had never been to the Mamaroneck Avenue pizzeria before, Harrison resident Betty Milano said it was probably her 25th time eating there.
"It's the best, best in Westchester," Milano said.
Local residents also turned out early for the one-day promotion, which was held from 5 p.m. through 10 p.m.
"Why not come, said Brad Lucas of Larchmont. It's $1 pizza."
Brad Nagy, co-owner of Frankie and Fanucci's, watched from a corner table as a line quickly formed at 5 p.m. on the dot.
"We're celebrating being named the best pizza and best new restaurant, so we thought we would thank our customers," he said. "That was reader's choice, which to us is more meaningful because when you have 1,000 people saying you're the best, that's good credibility."
Nagy and his co-owner Angelo Viscoso, opened the Hartsdale location in May of 2009. They already had a location in Greenburgh and said they chose Mamaroneck because of the activity on Mamaroneck Avenue.
"Mamaroneck is a happening town," Nagy said.
