HARRISON, N.Y. - They've styled Harrison's hair across the street from each other for almost 30 years. This weekend, Lisa and Marie's hair salon on Halstead Avenue will migrate across the street to become part of Gary's hair salon family.
"We're excited," Marie Lungariello of Lisa and Marie's said. "I think business will get better."
Lisa and Marie's will be leaving its 30-year-old home at 164 Halstead Ave. to vacate the aging facility and share a roof with Gary's Hair Salon across the street at 167 Halstead Ave. The two salons will remain independent of each other and will regulate their own prices.
"With so many small businesses struggling, this is the better thing to do," Lungariello said.
Gary Tenore owns the salon across the street and said bringing in his neighbors is a "win-win" situation. While Tenore will provide Lisa and Marie's with products and pay the building's rent, he will also be splitting the new tenant's revenue down the middle.
"We're going to make this work," Tenore said. "It's helpful for the both of us, and they're getting a place to work."
The idea sprouted two months ago when Gary's hair dresser Patty Rizzo was visiting Lisa and Marie's and struck up a conversation. After hearing of Lisa and Marie's trouble with their landlord and ongoing maintenance issues, Rizzo crossed the street to ask Tenore about a change.
"It's very nice for both of us," Rizzo said. "There will be more people, which means more publicity."
The salons held a trial run earlier this month with both groups operating under the same roof when Lisa and Marie's hot water system malfunctioned. Though the day was busier and more crowded, Tenore said it created an atmosphere that a hometown salon should have.
As for the move, Lungariello said the customers were excited for the change.
"We have loyal customers who would have followed us anywhere," Lungariello said. "This is the most convenient."
