"We're bringing our office into the 21st century," said Assessor Mark Heinbockel. The town's nearly 7,000 residential property cards are being removed and scanned, digitized and made available online.
"This is a service we're providing that I think is going to enhance how our constituents use our office," Heinbockel said. "It will allow us to do more with less."
The Assessor's office will be closed Wednesday and will re-open on Aug. 14.
Several other towns in the area have begun digitizing their property records. Heinbockel said that the process will allow easier access to the records for appraisers, realtors, and homeowners. At first the records will be available through a user-friendly kiosk on the counter in the Assessor's office, and Heinbockel said that once all the kinks are ironed out they will be available to be accessed online. The cards should be available online by January of 2014 at the latest. The physical property cards will still be available in the Assessor's office for those who prefer the old ways.
