Hurricane Irene Delays SUNY Purchase's Open

HARRISON, N.Y. - Purchase College delayed its opening week of classes and activities today with a Monday cancellation in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, according to college President Thomas J. Schwarz.

The category-three hurricane is expected to arrive this weekend with perhaps 125 mile-per-hour winds. Students can check the college's website and weather hotline at (914) 251-7500 for additional information as the storm develops.

"It's something that would usually be met with cheers," senior Sean Tomizawa said. "But the combination of the hurricane cancelling class and having Labor Day the next week is actually really unfortunate."

Schwarz said travel to the college over the weekend is not advised.

Purchase College will be conducting orientation as scheduled and are planning to accommodate many out-of-state students who will be arriving and staying on campus during the storm.

Residential students including those who have already arrived on campus were advised to check their Purchase College email addresses for updates regarding housing accommodations.

The hurricane also had the nearby Westchester County Airport cancel all flights inbound and outbound after 6 p.m. on Saturday.
