HARRISON, N.Y. -- With no winner in the Tuesday Mega Millions drawing, the jackpot has skyrocketed to $540 million, which has lottery ticket sales in Harrison higher than usual.
Currently, the Mega Millions jackpot is $540 million. Mega Millions ticket sales were already higher than usual two days ago when the prize was $363 million, but with no winner and a higher jackpot, more people are coming into local businesses solely to play the Mega Millions.
According to Big Top employee Arton Mirakaj, who has been working at that business for two and a half years, this is the highest jackpot he has ever seen. Mirakaj said that today has been extremely busy for lottery ticket sales but he expects it to be even more hectic tomorrow before the drawing is held.
Shell Gas Station employee Sam Lorenzo said that he had people waiting in line just to buy Mega Millions tickets, something that usually doesnt happen at that business. Lorenzo described the scene at the gas station as a mad rush to play Mega Millions. Rosann King, owner of Uncle Henrys, said that she has people coming into her bar to only buy Mega Millions tickets.
People will come in to and eat drink and might buy a lottery ticket while theyre here but we never got people just coming in to play Mega Millions until today, King said.
Resident Penny Pepe is hopeful that she will be the lucky person to hit the jackpot. Though she plays Mega Millions when the jackpot is around the $50 million mark, the current jackpot has her wanting to play even more.
I cant even wrap my head around how much money that is, Pepe said. If I win I would buy a two-family house so my mother could live with me, pay for my sons college education and donate a lot to Hopes Door, which is an organization that helps fight domestic violence.
The winning numbers for Mega Millions will be announced tomorrow night.
