Victims Identified in Westchester Plane Crash

ARMONK, N.Y. - The four people killed Saturday in a small airplane crash near the Westchester County Airport were identified by the Department of Environmental Protection as Manhattan residents en route to Long Island.

The victims were identified as Keith Weiner, 63, Lisa Weiner, 51, Isabel Weiner, 14, and Lucy Walsh, 14.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be at the scene Sunday investigating the crash.

The plane crashed Saturday shortly after takeoff, and emergency personnel swarmed to the scene..

"Upon investigation, we did determine there was one plane with an undetermined amount of passengers that crashed on New York City Department of Environmental Protection property," DEP Chief Peter Fusco said.

Fusco said that searches for survivors in the surrounding areas came up negative. The Armonk Fire Department responded to the scene and put out the fire that resulted from the crash.

According to Fusco, the plane took off about 1:05 p.m. for Montauk and was circling back to land at the Westchester County Airport with engine trouble before crashing in the wooded area behind MBIA Inc. headquarters at 113 King Street at 1:10 p.m.

A security guard in the office building placed the initial emergency call.

Fusco said the crash was a few hundred yards away from the Kensico Reservoir. No debris was in the reservoir, he said.

"The debris is surprisingly small," Fusco said. He could not confirm the size of the wreckage as the scene had not yet been processed.

The  Federal Aviation Administration, Westchester County Police, Armonk Fire Department, and New York State Police were investigating the crash Saturday.

John Ravitz, Chief Executive Officer for American Red Cross of Westchester County, said his organization would help support the effort.

"We are working with emergency responders," Ravitz said. "We will be here tomorrow to help both the emergency responders and any family members who may arrive. Our job is to be there and be that rock for emergency responders."
