Westchester Con Ed Workers Threaten To Strike

HARRISON, N.Y. — Con Edison workers have set a deadline of midnight tonight for a potential strike due to a failure to resolve contract negotiations.

The announcement comes as another heat wave hits the area this weekend. Temperatures for both Saturday and Sunday are predicted by the National Weather Service to be as high as 94 degrees.

The workers’ contract is set to expire, and union workers say Con Edison has failed to “repeatedly enter into meaningful bargaining.” Union President Harry J. Farrell said in a statement that the workers are dedicated to serving people, but have to stand up for the middle class at some point.

“We have to tell the corporate 1 percent, like Chairman Kevin Burke, whose wealth has grown even in these economic times, that enough is enough,” Farrell said. “When are hard-working men and women going to be treated fairly?”

Farrell said in the same statement that every indication shows the system Con Edison uses would not be able to hold up during the heat wave, adding that if the workers go on strike, there will be no one to repair the damage.

Con Edison has yet to comment on the pending strike.
