Olivier Famby, 21, of 62 Dewitt Place was charged with eight counts of first-degree robbery two counts of second-degree assault, all felonies; one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor; and one count of criminal possession of stolen property, which he did not plead guilty to. He pleaded guilty to one of the two assault charges, according to the District Attorney's office.
“Alert policing by a police officer on routine patrol ended a robbery spree targeting Westchester commuters that was becoming increasingly more violent,” DiFiore said after the defendant pleaded guilty. “Although some of the robberies occurred late at night, others were in the evening with the victims walking home from train stations, emphasizing why one should always be mindful of their surroundings and not focused on texting or talking on the phone.”
The robberies occurred in Pelham on Jan. 12, Jan. 31 and March 28; New Rochelle on Jan. 29, involving two victims; the Town of Mamaroneck on Jan. 17; and the villages of Mamaroneck and Harrison on Feb. 9, according to the office.
Famby was arrested April 27 after a police officer approached an illegally parked vehicle to write a ticket and noticed he fit the description of the robber in a number of area robberies, the District Attorney's Office said.
The officer also saw a .32-caliber handgun, which was later determined to have been stolen from Pennsylvania last year, and called for assistance to help in the arrest, the District Attorney's Office said.
Police then searched the vehicle, on a warrant, and recovered items believed to be property taken in previous robberies, the office said.
Famby will be sentenced July 16. He faces a maximum of 25 years in state prison.
Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Strongin of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
