HARRISON, N.Y. -- Ron Belmont was leading the race for mayor of Harrison against Joan Walsh, with 80 percent of districts reporting.
With 16 out of 20 districts reporting, Belmont had 75 percent of 4,215 votes.
The race was between Mayor Ron Belmont, a Republican, and former Mayor Joan Walsh, a Democrat. Belmont unseated Walsh in the election two years ago after Walsh had served two terms.
The major issues in this year's race involved downtown development and the town's spending. Belmont maintained that his administration has invested in the town, and that steps he had taken led to an influx of businesses opening in the downtown area. Walsh contended that the town is spending beyond its means, and that the MTA project at the Harrison train station needs to be completed in order to facilitate development.
Walsh also expressed desire to reduce the mayor's role and hire a full-time administrator to run day-to-day operations. Belmont said he would be open to discussing the idea, but only if it had full bipartisan support.
