Harrison Students Shine in Week of Wellness

HARRISON, N.Y. - Louis M. Klein Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Seligman said he has consistently advocated for a greater awareness of health and fitness in his students, a message he said has paid dividends.

"Over the past three years, I have challenged our students to be more involved, act as leaders and be more engaged in the development of the week," Seligman said.

Students from the middle school helped enforce their principal's message last week when they wrapped up a week of wellness activities and learning experiences with help from their teachers. Close to 400 students worked together to take an active role in the school's official "Wellness Week."

Kicked off by an opening assembly, LMK eighth graders featured the school's athletic teams alongside dance, drama and environmental clubs to promote health and wellness. The school's student council also participated in the ceremony, presenting a $700 check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation .

"The week afforded students with the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and provide a service to their school," Seligman said.

A wellness fair at the school included 30 different interactive booths promoting healthy eating and behaviors or advocating for diseases including breast cancer, lupus and diabetes.

Students were also given the chance to step inside their instructors' shoes in gym class when they were allowed to plan lessons in Zumba, self-defense, yoga, dance, speed and agility classes and more.

Members of the Environmental Club also served as classroom instructors. Eighth grade club officers designed a classroom lesson that divided participating classes into four stations, ending in the student-maintained vegetable garden.

"The week taught students valuable lessons in health and fitness as well as the importance of sharing experiences with the broader school community," Seligman said.
