Manhattanville Students Focus on Job Market

PURCHASE, N.Y. — With graduation less than two months away, Manhattanville College students are cautiously optimistic about the job market.

Senior Jonathan Garcia is hoping to go into finance. But it might be a challenge, he said, because he started that major as a junior and has limited experience in the field. But Garcia is relying on networking to get into the industry. Fellow senior Devin Riley, a marketing major, agreed that networking is the best way to go when looking for a job.

“That’s the key when you come out of college,” Riley said.

Students heard from a panel of professionals, most of whom are Manhattanville graduates, about what it will take to get jobs when they get out of college. Lauren Ziadie, a diversity recruiter for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, said that first and foremost, students will be asked about the company they are applying to.

“If you don’t know anything, the interview is over — at least with me it would be,” Ziadie said.

She also encouraged students to ask the interviewer questions, noting that each company and culture is different. Manhattanville students said diversity in the workplace is important when it comes to finding jobs. Senior Jerry Larose, who is majoring in psychology and management, called diversity in the workplace a “beautiful thing.”

“It’s about time that we are concentrating on a global economy,” Larose said. “We need to focus on the resources of the entire world so we can make the economy better.”

Though T’Keyah Thomas is just a freshman, she is already thinking about a career in sociology or psychology. She said the diversity of the modern workplace allows people to “step out of their comfort zone,” which she said helps in finding jobs.

“When we see more diverse people in the workplace it motivates us,” Thomas said. “If you just see one culture or ethnicity, you’re limiting yourself.”
