Johnson Leads Manhattanville Volleyball to Sweeps

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Manhattanville continued its early-season surge, sweeping visiting York College (N.Y.) and Penn State-Abbington in women’s volleyball, Saturday.

The Lady Valiants improved to 3-0 on the season, handling York, 25-14, 25-12, 25-9 and following a break, overwhelmed Penn State-Abbington, 25-6, 25-14, 25-9. Senior Ally Johnson led Manhattanville with 19 kills for the two matches. Freshman Veronica Ferreiras rang up 31 assists and finished with 10 service aces on the day. Freshman Sam Delmer also collected 10 service aces and had 28 digs. Makana Gomes registered 10 kills, 10 assists and seven digs.

Manhattanville was still flying high from its opening win over Purchase.

“That was a very tough match,” said Manhattanville coach Amanda Alayon of Purchase. “You could feel the energy with the gym being packed. The crowd was into the match and so were the players. “The girls were having fun and they played with a lot of heart.”

Manhattanville opened with York and imposed itself on the match. “I was pleased with our ball control in both matches,” Alayon said. “We were in control of the game and set the tempo of each match from the start. “Our goal was to play our tempo. Our defense played very well. They really worked hard and it gave our team energy.”

Delmer, who finished with 26 digs against Purchase, and Johnson were outstanding once again. “Sam is a hard worker and self-motivated person,” Alayon said. “The team feeds off of her energy. “We talk about game-to-game things we need to do and I told Ally that she just had to swing and be aggressive. She put a lot of balls away today.”
