Manhattanville's Gustavvson Receives a First

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Sarah Gustavvson accomplished a first recently for the Manhattanville women’s cross country team. The senior was selected as the Freedom Conference women’s cross country runner of the week, becoming the first Manhattanville woman to receive this honor.

“It was surprising,” said Gustavvson, who resides in Sweden. “It’s definitely means something and is special to be the first Manhattanville woman selected.”

Gustavvson was chosen based on finishing first and leading Manhattanville to the women’s title at the second annual Valiant Invitational. The Lady Valiants had five top-10 finishers, scoring 24 points.  Gustavvson covered the 4.43-kilometer course in 18 minutes even. Teammate Kelly Davidson was second, clocking in at 18:57 and Alexis Lanzilloti was fifth, finishing in 19:40.

Fox Lane graduate Pilar Mahady was seventh (20:49) and Arame Mbodj, a New Rochelle alumnus, was ninth (21:56). Though Gustavvson won, she chose to speak about the team’s performance first.

“The whole team ran really well,” Gustavvson said. “Being at home was an advantage for us. I didn’t think I was in good shape so I was pushing myself. I was surprised at myself that I was able to maintain that pace the whole race.”
